Interaction of toxigenic and non-toxigenic corynebacteria with eukaryotic cells: Adhesion, intracellular survival and host response

Corynebacterium diphtheriae is the causative agent of diphtheria, a toxaemic localized infection of the respiratory tract. By vaccination diphtheria is well-controlled in the industrialized world; however, the disease is a health problem in less developed countries. While the production of diphtheria toxin has been well-established as a major virulence factor, little is known about mechanisms crucial for colonization of the host, although this is an essential step of pathogenicity. The talk will focus on approaches to unravel the molecular basis of adhesion of C. diphtheriae strains to epithelial cells, internalization of bacteria, survival within macrophages and the host cell response to infection. Additionally, data on two closely related species - Corynebacterium ulcerans and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis - will be presented.
